Deep ice core samples reveal Earth’s climate history – Summit County Citizens Voice

Researchers have drilled kilometers deep into glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica in order to extract ice samples from as far back as 500 thousand years ago. These ‘ice cores’ can then be analyzed in order to obtain historical climate data. So far researchers have found that the Earth has in the past experienced rapid climate shifts — some in a matter of less than 10 years. This information is valuable as researchers attempt to learn more about climate change.
